HISTORY

Palo Verde Avenue Christian Church Nursery School was founded by the Christian Women's Fellowship (CWF) group of this church. It was their vision that the church classrooms, which stood empty during the week, should be filled with children of all faiths living in our community. Through hard work and months of preparation, the Nursery School doors were opened welcoming its first class of eight students in September of 1969.

Today, that vision continues. We now have a total enrollment over one hundred students. Over fifty students attend on Monday, Wednesday & Friday with another fifty or more students attending on Tuesday & Thursday.

We purposely do not offer a five day program. The founder's goal in 1969 and ours today, is to provide enrichment experiences in a classroom setting for the children of our community, which supplements what parents and care givers are doing at home in the child's daily life.

The school is affectionately known as “The Teddy Bear School by the local community.

SOCIALIZATION & DEVELOPMENT

Our emphasis is on socialization and development. By that we mean we will help our students learn how to get along in group or social situations. Through the guidance of our teachers, they will learn the importance of taking turns, sharing and playing cooperatively. The students will be encouraged to solve problems by using their words to express their needs, wants and dislikes to their teachers and to each other.

Through our daily schedule, our students will learn to transition smoothly from one activity to another. They will learn that there is a time to sit quietly on the rug to listen to a story, a time to sit at the table to work on a craft and a time to find an activity to do during free play. These are all important self control skills, which are necessary for success in their school careers.

We will work each day on the development of the children's fine and large motor skills. In the classroom, the students will make a daily craft and use a variety of manipulatives to improve their fine motor skills. On the playground, they will be encouraged to run, climb, ride bikes, hop, swing, skip and play catch to help develop their large motor skills.

LEARN BY EXAMPLE

We welcome children of all faiths to our school. Because of the religious diversity of our students, we do not evangelize in the traditional sense. We do feel strongly however, in the importance of teaching the "Golden Rule" which is, we all need to treat each other with respect, love, concern and compassion. We believe this basic lesson is best taught by example. Our teachers and staff relate to each child and to each other in this manner and we encourage our students to do the same.

LEARN THROUGH PLAY

It is our belief that children learn through play. We expose our students to colors, shapes, numbers, the alphabet, pre-math and pre-reading skills in all of the activities we engage them each day. However, it is not our goal to have our students learn to read and write. It is our goal to help them gain the tools they will need to help them successfully enter their formal schooling years.
